Snacktime: Whole Wheat English Muffin with Hummus & Avocado
This is one of my favorite snacks. Not only is it tasty, but you get some good carbs, some protein, some good fats and a vegetable/fruit (avocado is technically a fruit, feels like a veggie, or feels like a delicious creature of heaven for that matter).
I used Sabra Hummus, you can find it at Safeway or other grocery stores, an avocado from the Berkeley Farmers Market (another shout out to Will’s Avocados), and Orrowheat 100% Whole Wheat English Muffins.
If you are feeling less than inspired to eat whole wheat, maybe the 6 grams of protein 1 muffin has will be an inspiration. Also, they are delicious and taste, in my opinion, better than white muffins, and are way healthier for you.
Quick lesson on why whole wheat is better: White products are stripped of the more nutrient dense parts of the wheat, whereas whole wheat uses all parts of the wheat, hence, ‘whole wheat’. For more info check this out

Contrary to many people’s belief, fat is not a dirty word. Avocados have monounsaturated fats (good for you fats) which provides important minerals and vitamins. They also have lots of potassium and fiber, among other things.

I don’t think anyone needs convincing that hummus is delicious and wonderful.
In conclusion, this is a speedy, yummy, healthy snack/meal, and I highly recommend it.

The Informed Vegan: Harvard Food Plate Disses Milk.

theinformedvegan:

Harvard disses milk

Harvard University nutritionists have decided to tweak the USDA’s new “My Plate” chart in a move that is sure to piss off the dairy industry.

In June, the USDA updated the old food pyramid and put out a healthy eating pie chart called “My Plate.” The chart depicted a relatively…

Humans are biologically herbivores

Our so-called “canine teeth” are “canine” in name only.  Other plant-eaters (like gorillas, horses, and hippos) have “canines”, and chimps, who are almost exclusively vegan, have massive canines compared to ours.  (See picture below.)

Our early ancestors from at least four million years ago were almost exclusively vegetarian.

Our omnivorism means we’re capable of eating meat (useful from a survival standpoint if that’s all that’s available), but our bodies aren’t geared for it to be a normal, significant part of our diets.  Cats are capable of eating plant foods (read the ingredients on cat food sometime), but it’s silly to call cats omnivores just because they’re capable of eating that way.

The animals most similar to us, the other primates, eat an almost exclusively vegan diet (and their main non-plant food often isn’t meat, it’s termites).

Our teeth, saliva, stomach acid, and intestines are most similar to other plant-eaters, and dissimilar to carnivores and true omnivores.
Among animals, plant-eaters have the longest lifespans, and humans are certainly in that category (and yes, this was true even before modern medicine).
We sleep about the same amount of time as other herbivores, and less than carnivores and true omnivores.
The most common cause of choking deaths is eating meat. Real carnivores and omnivores don’t have that problem.

its real science.
